At Anagail Care Services, we are committed to helping our community make informed, healthier choices. This month in our Nutrition Label Series, we’re focusing on something small but mighty—sodium.
🧂 What is Sodium?
Sodium is a mineral found in salt. While our bodies need a small amount to help regulate fluids and keep our muscles and nerves working, too much sodium can be harmful, especially for your heart and kidneys.
The truth is: Most of us are getting way more sodium than we need.
💡 Recommended limit: Less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day
⚠️ What we’re getting on average: Around 3,400 mg daily
🫀 Why It Matters
Too much sodium in your diet increases your risk of:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Stroke
- Heart disease
- Kidney damage
This is especially concerning for Black and Brown communities who already face disproportionate health risks.
🛒 Where Sodium Hides
You might think most salt comes from the shaker—but over 70% comes from processed and packaged foods like:
- Canned soups and vegetables
- Deli meats and frozen meals
- Store-bought sauces and salad dressings
- Snacks like chips and crackers
🧾 Check the Nutrition Facts label:
- 5% Daily Value (DV) or less = low in sodium
- 20% DV or more = high in sodium
✅ Smart Ways to Cut Back
At Anagail, we believe knowledge leads to prevention. Here are some tips we teach our clients and caregivers:
✔️ Choose fresh meats over processed
✔️ Buy low-sodium or no-salt-added options
✔️ Season with herbs and citrus instead of salt
✔️ Make your own salad dressings at home
✔️ Read the label before you buy
✔️ Ask for sauces and dressings “on the side” when dining out
🗣️ Let’s Talk About It
If you’re living with high blood pressure or caring for someone who is, you don’t have to do it alone. Anagail Care Services offers health coaching, caregiver education, and wellness tools to help families make better choices together.
